There are seasons when the work you trained for, the work you were good at, simply cannot continue in the same way. A move. A waiting period. A life that has to be rebuilt in a new country before a career can follow. From the outside, it can look like nothing is happening. Inside, a great deal is happening.

I spent nine years as a banker in India. Then I moved to the United States, and for a time professional work had to wait. I was the same person — capable, trained, still interested in contributing — and yet the chapter I was in did not leave room for that identity to be practiced in public. I know how quietly disorienting that is. You do not stop being who you were. You also cannot pretend the pause is not reshaping you.

Many women I speak with recognize some version of this, even if the details differ. Caregiving. A relocation. A role that ended. A long stretch of putting other people first. The résumé has a gap, and the gap starts to feel like the story. It isn’t. A pause is a season. It is not a verdict on your usefulness.

What the waiting taught me was not patience as a performance. It was attention. When the old markers of progress are removed, other questions become audible. What still matters. What I do not want to return to unchanged. What kind of work would feel honest if I were allowed to choose more than one true thing at a time.

I have since returned to banking in the United States. That return matters to me. It is not a consolation prize, and it is not the whole of what I am building. Mirai Seasons exists because I needed a place — and I believe other women 40+ need a place — to think about identity, change, and the next chapter without being hurried into a single, simplified story.

You can come back to work and still want more room for yourself. You can be grateful for a new beginning and still grieve the years that felt suspended. You can hold a profession in one hand and a quieter calling in the other. None of that makes you unfocused. It makes you in the middle of becoming.

If you are in a pause, or just beyond one, you do not have to explain it perfectly before you are allowed to want something next. The career can wait. You do not have to.
